Wright Thought #24
The Counterfeit Science
I am fond of the following definition of psychology:
psychology, n. a mind-numbingly simplistic subject that has not solved one human problem personal, political, economic, or social, but which has wormed its way into a dominant position in education, the courts, government, business, medicine, the media, and popular culture – and which, predictably, has caused calamatous declines in all those areas.
Everhart Sraem
Just so there’s no mistake about it, I agree wholeheartedly with this definition. It is my position that not only has psychology done nothing to remedy the steep measurable declines in personal, political, economic, and social conditions on this planet. Psychology is the cause of those declines.
Not only has it been utterly ineffective; it has been negatively effective.
Not only does it have no clue about the causes of the declines in the personal, political, economic, and social conditions on this planet. It also lacks even the foggiest understanding of the subject it is supposed to be responsible for, the human mind. And despite this complete and shameless lack of understanding of its core subject, psychology has nevertheless pushed its ignorant and utterly idiotic ideas and solutions on every sector of society and into the popular culture, so that:
1. the fields that are dependent on an understanding of the human mind, the so-called social sciences, fields like sociology, political science, economics, and education, are, like psychology, utterly ineffective;
2. the real doers in society – the individuals who are trying to get the show on the road, the individuals who produce actual products, the individuals who are doing their best to raise their kids right, the individuals who are trying to take responsibility for their lives and the conditions around them – are constantly tripped up by senseless regulations, costly but ineffective social programs, political correctness, and other tentacles of psychological influence;
3. almost no one can think clearly anymore.
That is my position. Psychology is a malevolent tumor in the body of society that needs to be removed before it kills the entire body.
Of course, this effort on my part is based on a rather bold assumption: I’m assuming that you are one of the few who can still think clearly.
Psychology is a failed subject. They’ve had over 100 years to better conditions, 100 years to learn something useful about man and his mind, and instead we see the world as it is today. They keep asking for higher appropriations and a bigger piece of the action, yet their path is strewn on all sides with failure after failure after failure.
A field based on real knowledge can do something. A mechanic can repair a car. A doctor can cure a disease. A computer programmer can fix a bug in a program. But you never hear a psychologist talking about cures. They avoid the word like the plague. That’s because they can’t. They can’t cure a patient who is afraid of flying or snakes. They can’t cure a criminal who keeps robbing liquor stores. They can’t cure the man who beats his wife.
These are things that a true science of the mind ought to be able to do. Psychology is a bogus science, a conterfeit science. They can’t do anything a self-respecting science ought to be able to do.
And why can’t they? Because they lack one shred of real knowledge about their core subject, the mind. All they have is made-up knowledge, fantasies, pure fabrications, with no basis in reality at all. In other words, their theories are hallucinations.
It’s time for psychology to get out of the road. Completely. It’s already a dead subject. I am initiating the last rites over the cold and rotting corpse before it gets dropped into the ground for good.
